== William & Mary ==

[[William & Mary]] is a public research university in Williamsburg.

The institution was chartered in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II. Its campus became one of the anchors around which Williamsburg was laid out when the colonial capital was established in 1699.<ref>{{cite web

== History ==

Williamsburg's origins predate its role as the colonial capital.

The settlement developed around Middle Plantation, located between the James and York rivers. In 1699, Virginia's government moved inland from Jamestown, and the new capital was named Williamsburg in honor of King William III.<ref name="williamsburg-history" />

As colonial Virginia's capital, Williamsburg became an important center of government, commerce, religion, and education.

The capital moved to Richmond in 1780 during the American Revolution.

During the 20th century, the restoration of the colonial city transformed Williamsburg into one of the country's major historic tourism destinations.
